What Is a Dental Crown?

In this video, John Barnes, our lab tech, explains what a dental crown is, how it’s placed, and why precision at the margins is critical for long-lasting results.

A dental crown is a protective cap that covers a natural tooth. To prepare the tooth, we gently reduce it by about 1–2 millimeters, then place the crown on top. The edge where the crown meets the tooth is called the margin, and it’s very important that this seal is precise. A well-sealed margin helps prevent decay, keeps food from getting trapped, and ensures the crown lasts longer.
