Why Every Full Denture Adjustment Looks a Little Different
Every patient adjusts to dentures at a different pace. For some, it may take about a month. If you recently had teeth removed, your gums and bone need more time to heal, so the process may take longer.
Patients who have worn a removable prosthesis before often adjust a little faster than those wearing dentures for the first time. Even so, there are a few common changes patients may encounter as they get used to their new teeth.
What the First Month With Full Dentures Really Feels Like
Once you leave with your new dentures, your mouth will begin getting used to the change.
During the first few days, it’s common to notice:
- Excess saliva
- Minor soreness
- Pressure spots as gums adjust
When you first start speaking with your new teeth, some sounds may feel different. Speech usually improves with practice as your mouth learns how to work with the denture.
Eating takes some practice, too. Dr. Robert Ellis recommends easing back into chewing by doing the following:
- Starting with softer foods
- Chewing slowly
- Adding firmer textures gradually
By the end of the first month, speaking and chewing should start to feel more natural, and your denture should feel more comfortable. However, some patients may still need a little more time to fully adjust.
What Changes in Months Two and Three
By the second and third months, most patients feel much more comfortable speaking and eating with their dentures. Your mouth continues to adapt as you use them, and you may notice smaller changes over time.
You may also need a few adjustments along the way. If part of the denture feels bulky or rubs against your gums, we can reshape it during a follow-up visit to improve the fit. Older patients and patients who recently had extractions may need more time for the gums and bone to heal before the prosthesis settles into its final fit.
There are also a few things you can do at home to make the adjustment easier.
What You Can Do To Adjust Faster to Your New Dentures
The more you use your denture, the more natural it should begin to feel. Reading aloud or practicing difficult words can help your tongue and cheek muscles adjust.
When eating, start with softer foods and work up to firmer textures as you feel comfortable. Chewing on both sides can also help keep the denture balanced.
Daily care matters, too. Clean your new teeth every day to remove food, plaque, and bacteria. Take it out at night so your gums have time to rest.
