What’s the Difference Between a Dental Hygienist and a Dental Assistant?
In this video, dental hygienist Tauna Abegglen explains the difference between dental hygienists and dental assistants, including their training, focus, and roles in patient care.
Dental hygienists complete a college degree, which includes about 3,000 hours of clinical training. They must also pass five board exams and a state certification test before they can practice. Hygienists focus directly on patients, especially on gum health and preventive care for teeth.
Dental assistants, on the other hand, work more closely with the dentist during procedures. Their role is primarily doctor-focused, while hygienists are more patient-focused.
