Can a Regular Denture Be Converted Into an Implant Denture?

In this video, Dr. Robert Ellis shares how patients with existing dentures can gain stability and improved function through implant support.

Many patients come in with dentures they’ve worn for years and ask how we can make them more stable. In most cases, we can place mini dental implants and adapt the existing denture by adding housings with O-rings that connect to the implants. This can often be done on the same day as surgery, so you leave with your own denture, only now it’s stabilized and more secure.

There is one important consideration. With improved stability, you’ll be able to chew with much more force. While this makes eating far easier, the increased pressure can sometimes cause older acrylic dentures to crack. If that happens, or if we anticipate higher forces, we recommend having a new denture made with a metal reinforcement. This type of denture is designed to handle the added strength of implant support while still giving you the comfort and function you want.
