What Is Gum Disease?
In this video, dental hygienist Tauna Abegglen explains the difference between gingivitis and periodontitis, the two most common forms of gum disease, and what typically causes them.
Gum disease can be described in different ways. The most common terms are gingivitis (typical gum disease) and periodontitis (periodontal disease). Both involve inflammation of the gums, which can cause swelling and bleeding. In most cases, gum disease develops from poor oral hygiene, such as not brushing or flossing regularly.
