Looking for a reliable way to replace all your teeth? Take a moment to consider snap-on dentures. This advanced tooth replacement option restores the natural look and feel of your smile by securing your denture to dental implants. For many patients, the improved stability and comfort make this approach especially appealing. But as you learn about the benefits, it’s natural to start thinking about cost. A question that likely comes to mind is: Are snap-on dentures covered by insurance?
The answer depends on your specific insurance plan. We find that dental plans tend to cover some aspects of the process, like tooth extractions and the snap-on denture itself. But other parts of the process, like the dental implants, may not be covered.
Even with insurance benefits, you may have some out-of-pocket costs, but that shouldn’t stop you from getting the smile you deserve! At West Wind Dental, we offer payment plans to support you on your journey to restoring your smile.
What Are Snap-On Dentures?
Snap-on dentures are full-arch restorations stabilized with dental implants. You may also hear them called snap-in dentures, implant-stabilized dentures, or implant-retained overdentures.
Unlike traditional dentures, which rest on the gums, snap-on dentures attach securely to implants placed in the jawbone. Because they lock onto these implants, they provide far more stability and allow you to chew and bite more comfortably.
The denture “snaps” onto dental implants, which are small posts that we gently position in your jawbone. At our office, we typically use mini dental implants to secure the denture in place. These narrow-diameter implants are often ideal for patients who have been told they may not qualify for traditional dental implants.
With the added support of implants, snap-on dentures feel much more stable than traditional dentures. This improved stability can dramatically enhance your ability to bite and chew, helping your replacement teeth feel more natural.
Even though they’re secure, snap-on dentures are still removable. You can easily take them out each morning and night to clean your mouth and the denture. Some patients prefer to remove their dentures overnight, while others wear them continuously. Either approach works, as long as you maintain good daily cleaning habits!
The Snap-On Denture Process

Placing snap-on dentures begins with preparing your mouth for implants. If any remaining teeth can’t be saved, Dr. Ellis will remove them. He’ll then place the mini dental implants using a minimally invasive technique. He simply makes a small hole in the gum tissue and positions each implant needed in the jaw.
Once the implants are in place, the denture snaps directly onto them. In many cases, Dr. Ellis can secure the denture immediately after the implants are placed.
Depending on your needs, he can either create a brand-new denture or modify a denture you already have so that it snaps onto the implants.
Does Insurance Cover Snap-On Dentures?
As you’re considering snap-on dentures, a natural question is: What will my insurance cover? Coverage varies widely by plan, but many policies do cover some parts of the procedure.
For instance, we often find that Idaho’s Medicaid for dental care covers extractions and the creation of upper and lower dentures. However, it typically doesn’t cover mini implants or retrofitting an old denture to convert it to a snap-on denture.
Other insurance plans might cover implants and other parts of the treatment. Regardless of what procedures your insurance covers, an annual limit still applies. This means your insurance will cap the benefits they’ll cover each year. Once you hit your annual limit, you’ll need to pay for remaining dental expenses out of pocket until the start of the next year. But it really is based on your unique healthcare plan.
We’ve seen patients choose to maximize their coverage by completing their treatment across two calendar years, receiving a top denture one year and the bottom denture the following year.
Our office is happy to help you through this process. We can file claims with your insurance provider and help you use your available benefits to cover your snap-on dentures. And to make it simpler to afford those remaining costs, dental implant financing offers another line of support.
Break Down Remaining Costs With Financing
It’s normal to still have some outstanding costs after we apply your insurance benefits to your treatment plan. Financing helps make the remaining expense more manageable.
Payment plans let you spread the cost of your care into manageable monthly installments instead of paying it all upfront.
At West Wind Dental, we work with multiple finance companies that specialize in dental payment plans. In many cases, these companies perform a soft credit check, which doesn’t affect your credit score. Approval takes just minutes, and we can finance you while you’re in our office.
During your free consultation, we will help you understand all the factors that affect the cost of your care, make the most of your insurance, and leverage payment plans to manage your out-of-pocket costs.
