What Is a Semi-Removable Denture?

In this video, Dr. Robert Ellis breaks down the three main implant options for full-smile restoration and explains why many patients find the semi-removable denture to be the ideal balance of strength, comfort, and longevity.

When rebuilding a full smile with implants, there are three main approaches: a basic acrylic denture, a semi-removable denture, and a fully fixed roundhouse bridge.

The most effective balance for many patients is the semi-removable implant-supported denture. Unlike an acrylic denture, which is made of plastic and typically wears out after 7–10 years, the semi-removable option is built from durable porcelain designed to last a lifetime. It attaches to your implants with small O-rings, giving you the feel and function of permanent teeth without the hassle of taking it out every day.

Maintenance is simple. About every 3–6 months, you visit your dentist for a professional cleaning and O-ring replacement. The denture is removed, refreshed, and secured again all in one visit. You can remove it at home if you choose, but most patients prefer to leave that to the dentist. This provides long-term strength, comfort, and stability while remaining easy to maintain.

For comparison, some patients choose a fully fixed ceramic “roundhouse” bridge, which is permanently cemented and never comes out. Others go with the basic acrylic option, which is more affordable but less durable. But for most patients looking for a lifelong solution that feels permanent yet allows for easy professional care, the semi-removable denture is the ideal middle ground.
