Are One-Piece Implants Better Than Two-Piece Implants?

In this video, Dr. Robert Ellis compares traditional two-piece implants with one-piece implants, explaining why the simpler design often leads to faster healing, lower costs, and fewer complications.

A conventional implant is a two-piece system. The root portion is placed into the bone beneath the gum tissue, where it heals for about 4–6 months. After healing, the implant is uncovered, and a connector is added through the gum tissue. Finally, a porcelain crown is placed on top.

A one-piece implant combines all these components into a single unit, with the crown attaching directly to the top. One-piece implants are simpler to place, easier on patients, faster to heal, less expensive, and generally associated with fewer complications. They also show a lower risk of peri-implantitis, which is an infection that tends to occur more often with larger, two-piece implants.

The one-piece implant is a straightforward, reliable design that has been used for nearly 40 years with little change, and it is likely to become the dominant option in the market.
